Summer XC Camp Coaches
John Darrow
Coach Darrow has coached the boys and girls cross-country and track teams at Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills since 2009. The Notre Dame cross-country teams have qualified for the IESA State Championship meet in 8 of the last 9 seasons, winning multiple State trophies. In 6 of the 8 trips, Notre Dame has placed in the top ten teams in State, including two IESA State Championships. His teams have won four IESA Sectional Championships. Notre Dame competes in the Suburban Parochial League (SPL). During Coach Darrow's tenure, his teams have won 12 SPL XC Championships and 14 SPL Track Division championships. On the individual level, he has coached one individual IESA State Champion, 13 All-State runners, and 12 SPL individual champions. In 2020, Coach Darrow received the ITCCCA Distinguished Middle School Coach Award, a lifetime achievement recognition awarded by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Jack Darrow
Jack Darrow was captain of Notre Dame's 2012 IESA State Cross-Country Championship team. He competed for Fenwick High School, with PR's of 1:57 for 800 meters and 4:18 for 1600 meters. Jack led the Fenwick team to a 5th place finish in the IHSA Cross Country State Championship, running 15:11 for 3 miles. During college, Jack has worked as a manager for the University of Notre Dame Cross Country and Track programs. During this time, the team has twice won the ACC Cross Country championship and also finished in the top 10 at the NCAA XC Championships.
John Mulholland
A product of Elmhurst York High School's cross-country program, Coach Mul has coached Cross Country and Track at LaGrange St. Francis Xavier for the past 16 years beginning in 2004 and during the 2020 pandemic season as an associate coach for the AAU-affiliated Mavericks Running Club. During his tenure at SFX, its boys and girl's cross-country teams have qualified for the IESA State cross country championship meet every year since joining in 2014. SFX boys and girls teams have won Sectional championships five times while placing second or third an additional six times. In 2019, the SFX boys team was the IESA state meet Runner Up. Individually, Coach Mul has coached ten All-State SFX harriers. He has been actively engaged with the IESA, serving as a member of the Cross-Country Advisory Committee, and President of the Suburban Parochial League's (SPL) Cross County Division and rules chair of the SPL's Track & Field Division. He is a licensed IHSA CC and T&F official.
Emma Watcke
A 2020 graduate of Hinsdale Central High School, Emma was All-State in Track and Field (2019-1600m 2nd place) and Cross Country (2019-7th place). Emma was coached at Hinsdale Central by Mark McCabe. Prior to Winter 2019, Emma lived in Ohio and was All-State in Cross County (2016, 2017 and 2018) and Track & Field (2017, 2018). Emma won the 2018 Division 3 State Cross Country title & was part of three State Championship teams for Minster High School. On the track, Emma was Ohio Division 3 State Champion in 1600m (2017, 2018) and 4 X 800 relay (2018). She was a State Finalist in the 3200m in 2017 and finished as state runner-up in 2018. Minster's team was the State Runner-Up in 2017 and Team Champion in 2018. Emma currently is a student-athlete for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She runs both Cross Country and Track & Field for the Badgers. High School Personal Records: 1600m 4:54.91; 3200m 10:34.79; XC 3 mile 17:02.50; XC 5K 17:50.80
Ryan Doorhy
Ryan competed for Hinsdale Central High School on both the track and cross-country teams. He was a member of multiple State-qualifying teams. Ryan ran collegiately for George Washington University in Washington, DC. Ryan holds PR's of 1:57 for 800M and 3:59 for 1500M.
It is anticipated that Ryan will coach at weekend practices on an intermittent basis.
Sarah Cernugel
Sarah is a freshman in the Gateway program at the University of Notre Dame/Holy Cross College. She currently plays soccer on the Holy Cross soccer team. She played soccer and basketball all four years at Hinsdale Central High School where she earned all-conference honors in both sports and was a three-year captain on the basketball team. Sarah was the recipient of the Robert Bell Award recognizing the senior girl who has made the greatest contribution to the athletic program at Hinsdale Central High School during her four years of competition. Prior to high school, Sarah was on the Notre Dame School cross country team from 5th-8th grade where she made some of her best memories. She was a part of the first Notre Dame girls team to make it to the State Meet. She is excited to help coach cross country because she knows how important being a good runner is and how much it helps you in other sports and in life.
Chris Brady
Chris attended Fenwick High School and ran cross country and track. At Fenwick, he was a three-time State qualifier in the 4x800 relay, received All-State indoor honors in the 4x800 relay, and was a State qualifier in cross country. Chris previously competed in cross-country and track for Notre Dame School, where he was a member of the 2014 State Champion team and the 2015 4th place team, and earned SPL All-Conference and IESA All-Sectional honors. Chris is a freshmen at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Finance and Operations and Technology Management. He is currently training for the Chicago Marathon.
Dan Watcke
Dan is a student-athlete at Hinsdale Central High School, class of 2023. In 2021, Dan won the IHSA Class 3A State Championship in the 800M, and anchored Hinsdale Central's State Champion 4x400 relay with a 48" split. In the fall of 2019, Dan excelled at grade level XC competitions and moved to the Varsity Squad for the Championship portion of the season. He finished 4th at the IHSA 3A Regional & came back a week later to finish 8th at the IHSA 3A Sectional. Dan finished 82nd at the State Finals, the top 9th grader in the State. As a sophomore, Dan finished 2nd at the IHSA 3A Regional & 2nd at the IHSA 3A Sectional. Dan competed at the Shazam Championship race, 26th overall & top 10th grader in the State. On the track, Dan set school and SPL conference records for his efforts at Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills. He finished his 8th grade season with a win and 4:35 mile at the Magis Mile in Chicago. Dan's 9th grade track session was canceled and he looks forward to the 2021 outdoor season. Personal Records: Mile: 4:35 Magis Mile, 2019 (8th grade); 1600M: 4:23.47 indoors 2021; 800M: 1:50.34 (800M Jamboree 2021); XC: 14:54.16 (3 Miles). Caroline Darrow
Caroline is a senior at Fenwick High School. She competed on the cross-country and track teams as a freshman. Following injuries, she switched to serving as a team manager. Caroline is a graduate of Notre Dame School, where she led the first girls team in school history to qualify for the State meet, and earned SPL All-Conference and IESA All-Sectional honors. Caroline works as an intern with MileSplitIL.
Billy Cernugel
Billy is a sophomore at Hinsdale Central High school where he plays both football and basketball. Billy was a four year member of the Notre Dame Cross Country and Track teams, where his mile PR was 5:09. During that time Billy was an SPL All-Conference runner from 2016-2018. He also competed on the State teams from 2016-2018 and received All-State honors in 2018. Billy looks forward to coaching this summer.
Mikaela Burns
Mikaela is going to be a senior this fall at Fenwick High School. She has been running for Fenwick for 3 years, and ran at her middle school, Saint Francis Xavier. Mikaela and her middle school team qualified for the State meet both years she was on varsity. She also has been on Fenwick's varsity team all 3 years. She is looking forward to coaching this summer!
Mikey Domke
Mikey is a sophomore at Fenwick High School, competing on the track and cross-country teams. He previously ran with Coach Darrow at Notre Dame. At Notre Dame, Mikey led his team to the SPL conference championship. He broke the SPL record for two miles that had stood for 18 years, originally set by Eric Dettman. Mikey later received All-State honors, leading Notre Dame to a podium finish as the third fastest team in the State. His current PRs are 16:18 for the three mile, and 2:12 for 800M.
Katie Gilmartin
Katie is a graduate of Notre Dame School, where she participated as a top athlete on the cross country and track teams from 5th thru 8th grade. Currently, Katie is a freshman at Hinsdale Central where she completed her cross country season with a consistent performance in the top 5 on the JV team. Outside of running, Katie loves cheerleading and tumbling. She is looking forward to helping develop a love of running in younger students and is excited to connect with Coach Darrow again!
Erin Howard
Erin began running cross country in 5th grade at Notre Dame School and has been involved with the sport ever since. Erin was a member of the first girls team in ND history to make it to the State meet and also qualified for State as in individual her 8th grade year. This fall, she will be entering her senior year cross country season at Nazareth Academy where she will serve as a captain. Erin is thrilled to get the opportunity to help coach for the West Suburban Harriers this summer!
Aaron Doorhy
Aaron currently competes for Hinsdale Central High School, where he has run 4:48 for the 1600M and 10:36 for the 3200M He previously competed for Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills, where he was a member of multiple State qualifying teams, including two teams that placed in the top 4 in the state.
Kyle Doorhy
Kyle currently runs as a member of the Hinsdale Central cross country and track teams. Last fall, he competed at the 2020 Shazam State Championship Meet. Kyle holds PRs of 2:12 for 800M and 4:36 for 1600M. Kyle is one of the current record holders of the HC freshman indoor 4x800 record. Previously, Kyle competed for the Notre Dame cross country team where he ran on a State podium team.
Maggie O'Malley
Maggie is a senior at Fenwick High School. Maggie was a member of the cross country and track team all four years and loved it. She will be competing for St. Louis University this fall. She is super excited to help out at our camp!
Patrick Evers
Patrick is a sophomore at Benet Academy. He is a member of both the cross country and basketball teams at Benet. Patrick previously competed at Notre Dame School, where he was a member of a team that finished 3rd in State. He is excited to have the opportunity to coach this summer.
Declan Hanus
Declan is currently a sophomore at Benet Academy. He is member of the track, cross country, and basketball teams. Prior to Benet he competed in the same sports at Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills. Declan has learned a lot from his past experiences as an athlete and is excited to help out this summer.
Maria Quinn
Maria has participated in track and cross country since 6th grade, and is so grateful for her running experiences. She ran at St. John of the Cross in the SPL league, and has been a part of Fenwick running all four years. Her favorite memory from high school was placing fourth in state with her best friends on the cross country team.
Luke Gooding
Luke is a junior at Hinsdale Central High School, where he runs on the track and cross country teams. He has been running competitively for 7 years . Luke specializes in the 800M and 1600M, with PRs of 2:05 and 4:43.
Emma Salzman
Emma is a junior at Fenwick High School where she runs track and cross-country. Emma started running cross country with Coach Darrow the summer before 5th grade, which led her to become a successful runner in high school. Emma enjoys running because of the friendships she has made and sense of community that running provides.
John Mowrer
John is a sophomore at Nazareth Academy. He runs cross country in the fall and plays lacrosse in the spring. John previously competed at Notre Dame School, where he raced on a team that placed 3rd in the State. He is really looking forward to helping out this summer at the camp.
Emma Shannon
Emma is a junior at Benet Academy and began running cross country in 5th grade. Emma now runs both cross country and track at Benet. She enjoys running because of the close friendships she has formed throughout the years. Emma is excited to help out this summer and reconnect with former teammates!!
Joey Schultz
Joey is a senior on the cross country and track team at Fenwick High School, where he has been a four year varsity runner. His personal best for 3 miles is a 16:57, and on the track he has run 800 meters in 2:05 and 400 meters in 52 seconds. Joey received All-State Honors in 2021 in the 4x100 Relay. Prior to high school, he ran for Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills, where he was on the 2014 State Champion Team and the 2015 4th overall team, and received All-State Honors in 2016.
Daniel Shannon
Daniel is a freshman at Benet Academy where he runs cross country and plays basketball. He has been running since 5th grade and ran at State all 4 years at Notre Dame. Daniel was a part of the 3rd place State team in 2018. He then went on to place 6th at his freshman conference meet at Benet. Daniel is looking forward to working with West Suburban Harriers, seeing old friends and meeting new ones!
Heather Sledzinksi
Heather is a senior at Montini High School. She participated in cross country and track for all four years of high school and for Holy Trinity School since 5th grade. In track, she has competed in running events ranging from the 100 meter to the 800 meter, as well as in relay races. Heather enjoys training runs with her teammates and is looking forward to helping out at the running camp.
Nicholas Strayer
Nicholas is an alumni of St. Frances Xavier grade school, where he ran cross country from 5th to 8th grade. He set the SPL cross country 8th grade record and was the IESA Class A individual runner-up at the State Championship Meet. Nicholas is now a freshman at Lyons Township, where he has set new PRs of 15:51 for 3 miles, and 4:32 for the 1600.
Ian Surowiec
Ian is currently a sophomore at Nazareth Academy. He is a member of the Nazareth cross country, track, and soccer teams. Ian has PR's of 2:15 for the 800M and 5:00 for the 1600M. Ian was previously part of the Notre Dame cross country team, where he competed on a team that finished 3rd in State.
